DoddieCup555 Cycle Ride - 9/10/11 Feb 2023

After the sad news over the weekend of the passing of Doddie Weir OBE following his courageous battle with MND (Motor Neurone Disease), we are honoured to confirm that the club will be taking part in the DoddieCup 555 cycle ride in February. This is a charity fundraising event in aid of the Doddie Weir Foundation for MND www.myname5doddie.co.uk.

Our team of riders will take part in the event to deliver the match ball for the Scotland v Wales 6 Nations match from the Principality Stadium, Cardiff to Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh from Thursday 9th Feb – Saturday 11th Feb, a 555-mile journey arriving in Edinburgh with the ball in time for kick off.

Newtown RFC is to be one of the many stopover points along the route with approximately 300 people, including several former international rugby players, expected to pass through Mid Wales on day 1 of the event.

We are looking to finalise our team of riders who are each capable of riding 50-70 miles on each of the two days at a reasonable pace, likely to be in 15-20 mile stages through day and night. We also need volunteers to serve refreshments at the club on Thursday 9th Feb, and support crew on the road for the entire ride.

This is a high-profile event for the club to be involved in and an opportunity to open our doors to welcome new friends from the amazing rugby community, whilst also contributing to a fantastic cause in the name of the great Doddie Weir OBE.

If you have experience of distance riding and would like to be part of the riding team, would be willing to be part of the support crew, or be at the club to help provide refreshments for the riders and support teams, please contact Bob Jones vicechairman@newtownrugby.co.uk, or message us via our social media platforms asap. We need to have the team confirmed within a couple of weeks, and it’s worth noting there are only 10 weeks to prepare!
